From Our Pastor

Mother's Day

Posted 11 May, 2017 by Pastor Keith Ritchie

Children's Puppet Team will share a special production for Mother's Day; there will also be a candle lighting litany and other ways in which we remember and honor our mothers. The scripture for the service was a favorite of my mom, John 14:1-24, and reminds us of the good news of how the risen Christ is with us beyond Easter Day.

On Thursday, May 18th at 6pm we will hold a meeting to focus on recommendations from the Steering Committee who coordinated conversations about containing costs, increasing revenue, and communicating the ministries of First UMC. Though only members of Church Council may vote, all are welcome to attend and offer comments.

The search committee for new leadership for our music ministries, of which Craig Dietrich is chair, met this past Tuesday. We are advertising for a full-time music director who would lead all choirs. As this search continues, Becky Smith will lead the Chancel Choir. Please remember this committee and its members in your prayers.

On May 21st, First UMC is to take part in a "Spring Charge Conference" at Stanleytown UMC at 3pm. This Charge Conference is being called by our District Superintendent, Janine Howard. The reason for such a conference in spring is to follow up on our most recent charge conference last fall. At the conference, each church is being asked to report progress on goals established last fall, as well as to discuss "best practices" for ministry. During this conference, Janine will also provide teaching and encouragement for ministry. I encourage you to take part in this conference and to share in conversation with other district churches about the ways in which we share the gospel of Christ.

Remember the opportunity to serve Christ by way of the Lunch Bunch ministry of this church. We have openings for volunteers on the second and fifth Thursdays of the month. If interested, contact Margaret or Ed Dietrich ( or call the church office.

Remember also the ministries of the church as highlighted on the church website -, and on Facebook. Some wonderful photos of last Sunday's service, featuring the Children's Choir and the reception for the McDonalds, have just been added. Invite others to take a look as well!

I am always reminded of the special place First UMC is and of the exciting ministries to which God calls us.
