Can We Start Over?

Posted 8 June, 2017 by Pastor Keith Ritchie

Worship this Sunday leads us to the question, "Can we start over?" This question is before us as our worship in June focuses on the new life we know as followers of Jesus. Last Sunday, we spoke of the new life we know in baptism. This Sunday, scripture from Isaiah 43 is before us. This scripture witnesses to God restoring his people and bringing them home after their painful time of exile. So: can we start over? If so, what does this look like?

We are also grateful to honor the graduates of First Church on Sunday. These graduates and their families are to be proud of all they have accomplished and excited for the bright futures set before them. I welcome the opportunity as we worship to offer our blessing and affirmation to these graduates.

The "Creator in Me" Faith and Art class begins on Wednesday, June 14th, at noon in the Uptown Ministry Center. During each class, those participating will learn new and exciting art techniques that will help us deepen our relationship with God. The first of these classes will focus on silk painting; classes will also be offered in July and August. Classes are open to all; there is a small materials fee.

I hope you have the church picnic on your calendar for Tuesday, June 27th, at 5:30pm. The picnic will take place at Fieldale Park. The church will provided fried chicken and drinks; please bring a favorite side dish or dessert. Special music from "Gone Fishin'," a Bluegrass Gospel band from Oak Level, will follow the picnic. I have heard "Gone Fishin'" and can tell you they are good! I am excited to hear them at the picnic and I know you will enjoy them.

Thank you for your support of Vacation Bible School, which will be held at First UMC June 26-30. Annette Huckfeldt and a great team of volunteers offer a week of Vacation Bible School that is unmatched anywhere. There is need still for lava lamps and bean bag chairs, as well as Sunday comics and boxes. Thank you for your support of this exciting ministry!

Thank you also for your support of the Youth Mission trip to Copper Hill, Tennessee, July 16-23. As these youth, along with their leaders Maegan Mitchell and Paula Ritchie, will be leaving for Copper Hill on Sunday, July 16, we will bless them for this mission work on Sunday, July 9th, as we worship. I am excited for all who will be a part of this trip, as I remain wonderfully blessed by being part of these mission trips in 2015 and 2016.
