From Our Pastor

Who Is Family

Posted 7 June, 2018 by Pastor Keith Ritchie

I am grateful that Maegan Mitchell will again lead worship for First UMC on Sunday morning. Maegan will preach from Mark 3:20-35; a sermon titled "Who Is Family?" The Chancel Choir will sing, "Like a Dove." (Paula and I are leaving Friday morning so that I may officiate at a wedding for some family friends out of town. We will return late Sunday.)

This, we know, is not the only service of worship at First UMC this week. On Thursday, we witness to the resurrection as we remember the life of Dr. Don Holsinger; on Sunday afternoon, we affirm we are a resurrection people as we remember the life of Bea Mitchell. We grieve with the Holsinger and Mitchell families and lift them to God as we pray. We also remember that God has overcome death through the resurrection of his son, and thus calls us together at this time to claim the promise of eternal life and to know the presence of the One who is the resurrection and the life.

I thank the many of you who attended the District meeting we hosted last Sunday regarding the conversation regarding human sexuality, a conversation ongoing in the United Methodist Church. I wish the meeting had been more helpful for all involved; I have shared your feedback with Janine Howard, the Danville District Superintendent. I am grateful for your interest and concern about this conversation, grateful for your attentiveness to this meeting. As this conversation continues until the called General Conference in February, 2019, I remind you we will host a study on the text "Living Faithfully: Human Sexuality and the United Methodist Church" later this summer. Copies of this book are available in the church office.

Thanks to you who have already contributed canned goods and non-perishables for Annual Conference. I invite you again to support this ministry, as these food items will be taken to Hampton when I go to Annual Conference next Friday. These foods will be received there to support local food banks.

Mark the church picnic on your calendar for June 26th, 5:30pm, Fieldale Park! This is a covered dish picnic with the church providing fried chicken, drinks, and paper products. This is always a highlight of the church year; I look forward to seeing you there.

Remember the invitation to support the ministry of Vacation Bible School. You may do so by contributing various items as listed in the church bulletin (also found on the church website.)  The lunch bunch ministry also has opportunities to help feed our neighbors each Tuesday and Thursday morning (by volunteering, you are not committing yourself to each Tuesday and Thursday; just those days that work best for you. Thanks!)

I am excited about the "Small Hands; Big Mission" event taking place June 29-30 in the Uptown Ministry Center. You may support this event, offered for rising 4th through 7th graders, by contributing various hygiene items (also listed in bulletin.)

Thank you for your response to God's call to worship and serve.
