Advent Schedule

The last Sunday of our liturgical year, Christ the King Sunday, is November 25. First UMC will have Brass5 (a brass quintet) from Roanoke offering special music for the 11:00 AM service to celebrate the coronation of Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.

Hanging of the Green will be Sunday morning, December 2, at both services - 8:45 AM in the chapel and 11:00 AM in the sanctuary.

For the first time at First Church, we will offer special Noontime Advent Services in the church sanctuary on Wednesdays, November 28, December 5, December 12, and December 19. Special music will be offered as well as the sacrament of Communion.

First United Methodist Church's Children's Christmas Musical will be held on Sunday, December 9, at the 11:00 AM worship service. Children's choirs and puppet team will combine their talents for a very sweet production of Christmas Around the World.

We will have a Blue Christmas (or Longest Night) candlelight service in the church chapel on Thursday, December 20 at 6:00 PM. Grief and loss are difficult to deal with during the holiday season. This service is time to reflect, remember, mourn, and share with others. The Rev. Bonnylee Witt, Chaplain at Sovah Hospital, Martinsville, will share leadership of this time.

On Sunday, December 23, at 11:00 AM, the Adult Chancel Choir of First Church will present a Service of Lessons and Carols, featuring the choral music of John Rutter. A 10-piece orchestra ensemble featuring players from the Roanoke Symphony will accompany this service.

Christmas Eve Services will be at 8:00 PM and 11:00 PM. The 8:00 PM service will be family friendly; children are invited to wear their pajamas to this service! The 11:00 PM service will be a service of candlelight and communion.
