Director of Music (Full-Time Salaried)

We are searching for leadership in the area of music ministries to join our staff in late summer 2018.

Description of needs for this position:

  • Coordinate and be in charge of the total music program of the church including planning, developing, conducting, and evaluating a comprehensive music program at various levels.  This includes the Chancel Choir (adults) and Children's Choir (K-5) with a particular emphasis on the vibrant children's program.
  • Coordinate the Church Music Ministry with the calendar and emphasis of the church.
  • Assist the pastor in planning congregational services of the church; be responsible for the selection of music, subject to the approval by the Senior Pastor.
  • Enlist, train, and supervise the individual choir leaders and accompanists for the church music program.
  • Recruit new members for all choirs and music program activities.
  • Oversee periodic tuning and maintenance of all musical instruments.
  • Prepare an annual budget to be recommended to the Finance Committee.
  • Provide music for the 8:45 and 11:00 am Sunday services and any special services the congregation is expected to attend, including solos and instrumental music.
  • Hold at least one rehearsal per week for the Chancel Choir and direct choirs at the 11:00 am Sunday worship.  Additional rehearsals for the perfection of special and seasonal music may be required.
  • Develop member gifts and talents as related to music
  • Annually seek educational opportunities for professional and personal growth and development as budget constraints allow.
  • Provide two major works per year of representative titles.
  • Education minimum of BA/Music. Salary commensurate with experience.

First United Methodist Church of Martinsville is a downtown church with a rich musical tradition that is seeking a part-time organist.

Primary responsibilities include providing organ service music year-round for one weekly traditional worship service, accompaniment of choir with organ anthems and some attendance, when needed, at the weekly adult choir Wednesday evening choral rehearsal. The church has a pianist/accompanist who currently accompanies the adult choir rehearsal. Responsibility for accompanying adult choir rehearsal is negotiable. The Organist works with the pastor, Director of Music Ministries and Staff-Parish Committee and reports directly to the Director of Music Ministries. The Organist will diligently work with the Pastor and Director of Music Ministries to maintain the integrity of worship in planning the musical elements and submitting information in a timely fashion.

The Organist will have right of first refusal for all weddings. Funerals are the responsibility of the Organist but there are other accompanists on staff.

Primary requirements: The candidate should be an accomplished organist, but piano and accompanying skills are also required.

A Bachelor of Music is required. Suitable alternate credentials may be considered but evidence of formal organ instruction are required, as well as extensive liturgical organ experience

The organ is a four manual Moller tied to a two-manual, antiphonal Dyer, 45 ranks.
